Hey folks! This is Kolten from Next Gen Remodels.

Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.

Today's question is:

"Do You Remove Old Siding? Can New Siding Be Installed Over the Top?"

"Do You Remove Old Siding? Can New Siding Be Installed Over the Top?"

Answer from Kolten

This depends on the house. There's lots of different types of siding, uh, lots of different ways to install it. Sometimes, in certain cases, when the customer might not necessarily have the money to rip everything off and redo the Tyvek and then install new siding, we could potentially just install a lap siding over a sheet siding.

Because the sheet siding is usually T1-11. It's, uh, tongue and groove, clicks together, and it has vertical lines, right? Well, that's a flat surface. So we can install lap siding over the top of that, but we can't install lap siding over the top of lap siding because it's not a flat surface.

Short Summary

When questioned about removing old siding versus installing new siding over it. Kolten Redfield explained that this depends on the house and siding type, noting that lap siding can be installed over flat sheet siding like T111 due to its smooth surface, but not over existing lap siding because it lacks a flat surface.
