Hey folks! This is Kolten from Next Gen Remodels.

Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.

Today's question is:

"Do You Repair the Subfloor Before Laying New Flooring?"

"Do You Repair the Subfloor Before Laying New Flooring?"

Answer from Kolten

"This is another great question. We actually, depending on the type of flooring it is, we, if we're installing LVP, I actually put a whole nother layer of subfloor down on top of the existing subfloor. And we do that in a cross hatch style. So whatever the existing subfloor is laid down, we lay it the opposite way to cross hatch and tie everything together.

And this actually prevents you from having your LVP lift up or separate or crack, which is super common and super noticeable when you see it in a lot of these newer homes actually, you know? People are having problems with their LVP after five years and that's because other contractors are only laying down a single layer of subfloor on top of the floor joists.

What we do is double layer that, creating the cross hatch pattern and it makes sure that nothing does any separating or moving."

Short Summary

When asked about checking and repairing subfloors before installing new flooring like LVP or hardwood. Kolten Redfield stated that for LVP installations, they add an additional layer of subfloor in a cross-hatch pattern to prevent lifting, separation, or cracking, which is a common issue with single-layer installations by other contractors.
